Cooking is about so much more than just food.

All Ages

Cooking and baking are wonderful activities that are so educational and yummy! Here is one of my fail safe recipes:


  • 275g plain flour
  • 100g butter
  • 100g caster sugar
  • 1 medium egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Mix the sugar and butter together. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Mix in the flour. Then roll out the dough and cut out shapes. Cook at 190 degrees for about 10 minutes.

Encourage kids to do as much of it as possible but obviously that will be age dependant. I always assumed that baking was something children did when they were 3 plus but my 16 month old loves it. The biscuits have lots of finger marks in them and the mixture is half eaten before it goes in the oven but they have so much fun!!!

Cooking and baking help develop those kitchen life skills and let’s face it none of us want our kids to be the ones that don’t know how to boil an egg when they go off to university! But cooking and baking are so much more than just kitchen skills. Reading and following recipes helps develop reading and sequencing skills. Weighing ingredients helps numeracy and anyone who has ever kneaded bread will tell you that baking helps you blow off steam!

Tops tips:

  1. Clear the dining table and cover it with a large wipeable table cloth. That way they can safely sit or stand at the table to cook or bake.
  2. Share the yummy rewards with family, friends and neighbours. This helps to teach sharing and kindness. It also helps you not eat a million more calories than you intended!
